2020-08-12 Overtraining occurs when a person exceeds their body's ability to recover from strenuous exercise. Overtraining can be described as a point where a person may have a decrease in performance and plateauing as a result of failure to consistently perform at a certain level or training load; a load which exceeds their recovery capacity. People who are overtrained cease making progress, and can the direction of the overtraining syndrome and requiring more recovery time (8, 32, 33). The de fi nitions bring to light that the physiological adaptations from training through Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) describes a combination of physical and mental abnormalities that results from cumulative high-level physical activity that is not accompanied by adequate recovery. OTS is generally used to refer to an abnormal and persistent state characterized by physical, mental, hormonal and immunological dysfunction. Overtraining is considered severe nonfunctional overreaching that results in a prolonged performance decrement (>2 months) and more severe symptoms.
